Estate regeneration

Question number3358/2011
Meeting date16/11/2011

Question by Jenny Jones

Do you agree that estate regeneration plans shouldnÂ’t involve knocking down places that people like to live in?

Answer by Boris Johnson (1st Term)

This is too sweeping a statement. In a growing city with acute housing needs, poor housing quality in some places and a finite supply of land, demolition may be necessary to improve and extend the dwelling stock for both existing and new residents. I do agree that wherever estate renewal projects are being considered, it is important to engage with the residents affected and with local communities more widely. This collaborative approach will dispel some of the myths that can arise, minimise adverse impacts on residents and secure local as well as strategic benefits from regeneration.
